The 32-year-old finished the competition with 12 goals, one clear of messi who has 11 goals after Barcelona crashed out of the tournament in the quarter-final against Juventus. 
Ronaldo has either won or shared the Champions League top-scorer award six times. Messi is closely behind him with five awards.
